At the beginning of each year, or when offered a
different insurance by their
employers, patients ask us questions about their insurance
deductibles, co-pays and coverage for services. We hope
this will answer some of the most common questions.
A: A deductible is the amount of out-of-pocket expense you are required to pay before the insurance company will cover any portion of your medical expenses.
Q: How is my deductible determined?
A: When you signed up for your insurance, you
agreed to pay a certain amount for your policy. You also
pre-determined how much out-of-pocket expense, or deductible you
will pay each year. This
amount is set by you and your insurance company, not by the doctor's
office. Often, people choose a high deductible in order to lower
their policy premium.
Q: How do I know how much my deductible
is?
A: Your deductible should be shown on your
insurance policy. If not, call the customer service number listed on
your insurance card and they will be happy to help you with that or
any other questions you may have concerning your policy. They can
also let you know how much of your deductible has been met.
Medicare recipients now have a $155 deductible, beginning January 1, 2010.
